June 2008

  • Merchandise
    •  I have a few 'History of Karate'  by Shihan Higaonna books left - please let me know if you would like to buy one.   They cost £40 each and once these few remaining books have been sold, I will  not be getting any more.  These are hard to find as they are out of print.
    •  I have managed to obtain a price for individual club jackets either with or without names.  They cost £50 without and £60 with names, but I need to order a minimum of 5 to get this price.  Please let me know if you are interested.  I have one if anyone would like to see it.
    • T shirts - these are nearly all gone too so I will probably do another order soon.  They cost £10 for children adn £12.50 for adults.
    • Shin and instep and mitt sets.  Please let me know if you are interested in owning your own set - £25 for a set of both.
  •  Chris Poore successfully graded to Shodan on 8 June at the Honbu Dojo Black Belt   Weekend.  Well done Chris!
  •  Tooting Karate Club will  be performing a demonstration at The Beatrix Potter School Summer Fete on 21 June at 1.15pm.  More details will be posted as soon as I have them.

NEWS -THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

  •  Sensei Tony Smith is hosting Sensei George Andrews at his Hereford Dojo on 13-14  September.  I would like as many of Tooting Dojo to come as possible to support this course.  There are good local camping facilities at a reasonable price or there are a number of pubs that have accommodation. See me for further details.

Children's Karate Tournament at Tooting Karate Club

Following on from the first friendly event in October 2007, the children of Tooting dojo were very keen to host another event with interest expressed from other local dojos. It therefore seemed a great opportunity to host another event in the Spring.  This time it was a much bigger event and from Tooting, Bourne Hall and Paddock Hill dojos (Norbury could not attend this time) there were an amazing 30 children participating!

The format was the same with San dan gi, kata and kumite and there were all ages from 5 ½ to 13 and therefore the results were split by age groups.

The San dan gi event was of an excellent standard and there were some wonderful concentrated routines resulting in:

1. Naia Okeke – Tooting Dojo

2. Patrick O'Mahoney - Tooting Dojo

3. Daniel Hosking – Tooting Dojo

4. Jack Williams - Paddock Hill Dojo

In the Kata event the results were split under 8s and over 8s. There were some strong kata performances from the older children that demonstrated that they had a very good grasp of the movements and showed great promise for the future in karate-do. This made all the points scored very close:

Senior

1. Harry Davies – Paddock Hill Dojo

2. Bradley Anstee - Paddock Hill Dojo

3. Jonathon Anstee - Paddock Hill Dojo

4. Steven Brown - Paddock Hill Dojo

Junior

1. Joshua Pickard - Bourne Hall
2. Sian Elson - Paddock Hill
3. Elliot McCarthy - Paddock Hill

4. Harry Harischandra - Bourne Hall

The Kumite event was fought on two mat areas and was split into under and over 11s. All the children fought 3- 4 times with Senseis Daphne and Andre refereeing the under 11s and Sensei Jason Rogers and myself with the older children (as these guys were all bar one from Paddock Hill dojo!).

We saw some superbly executed techniques – from the older children perfect Jodan Mawashi geris (round house kicks to the face with utmost control), well timed combinations of techniques and all bouts were hard fought, demonstrating excellent spirit and good attitude to others - they were a credit to their Senseis.

The results for the 11 and over:

1. Aaron Fraser- Hitchin - Paddock Hill Dojo

2. Harry Davies - Paddock Hill Dojo

3. Bradlee Anstee – Paddock Hill Dojo

4. Steven Brown - Paddock Hill Dojo

The under 11s were all shapes and sizes but everyone showed great respect, spirit and good techniques with some very strong kiais!  There was good range of techniques on offer with chudan mawashi geris (roundhouse to the middle) as well as combinations that meant the points were high for all - well done!

1. Daniel Anstee - Paddock Hill Dojo

2 .Sian Elson - Paddock Hill Dojo

3. Luke Elson - Paddock Hill Dojo

4. Jack Williams - Paddock Hill Dojo

There were also some special awards for achievement, spirit and most promising students – these went to Chike Okeke, Richard Evans and Giselle O'Donoghue.

Overall, this event was intended to be a safe place to practice competition and for all to get to know the other children. There was a very nurturing atmosphere with the parents helping with organising the fighters and getting them into their red or white belts. I felt very happy to be with the junior IOGKF family and all their supporters and proud to have been able to host this event.

My thanks go to Maroulla Sullivan for being chief scorer, timekeeper and prize sorter and Senseis Daphne, Andre and Jason for all their help, support and student participation.

Watch this space for dates of the next one!

October 2007

The inaugural inter-club friendly tournament was held at Tooting dojo between the students of the club and that of Sensei Joost of Norbury dojo. There were 10 children in total and so we were able to hold the event on a Saturday morning.  We started with a traditional warm up and some kata and kumite practise and then went straight into the events that included san dan gi, kata and kumite in which all the children participated, completing 2 kata and 4 fights.

The children that held the most points or wins received a medal for 1st , 2nd & 3rd place and all participants received a certificate of participation.

Everyone enjoyed meeting new friends and taking part in the event.  My thanks to Mrs Roberts and Mrs Okeke for time keeping and scoring and for Sensei Joost and his students for making it such a fun event.

Dojo Etiquette #1
